Hospital Indemnity Plans
These policies pay a lump sum benefit (amount differs by carrier) upon hospital admission and contain provisions to buy additional coverage for each day of hospitalization up to the amount and number of days of coverage offered. Additional riders can be added (varies by carrier) to cover items such as durable medical equipment, physicians’ and surgeons’ benefits, RN at-home benefits, and daily skilled nursing facility benefits.
Availability and provisions vary by carrier and state of residence.
These plans are offered on a guaranteed (i.e. no health questions) issue basis to individuals for those between age 64 ½ and 65 ½ in some states.
We suggest considering the Plan Enhancer set of benefits from Allstate. The basic policy is an accident medical expense policy, and a hospital sickess rider (and even a critical illness rider) can be added for very nominal cost. These are indemnity benefits that do not require use of in-network providers. Someone with a high deductible plan can add coverage for both accidents and admission to a hospital for sickness for very nominal cost. This can have the effect of eliminating or reducing the deductible in a medical policy if a person has an accident or is admitted to a hospital for a reason other than an accident.
